November 20, 2012: CLAUD EDWARD "DICK" EARWOOD died today in Jackson, TN, after many months of convalescence in a retirement home.  As a student at Tech, Dick was chaplain of the Non Com Club, an active member of Young Life Club, an officer at Peabody Canteen and secretary/ treasurer of his home room.   He participated in the senior class play,  was chosen the end man in the Minstrel, and was voted by the senior class as "Best Dressed Boy" in the Annual's Hall of Fame.  For four years during the Korean War, Dick served honorably in the U.S. Air Force.  He is survived by 2 sons, Rick Earwood of Memphis and Brent Earwood of Jackson, TN.  He also leaves his brother, Bill Earwood of Tupelo, MS, 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.  Interment is at the Veterans Cemetery in Memphis, TN.

November 15, 2012:   After a long illness, GENE WELDON (FLOYD) passed away today in Denver, CO.  Gene was an honor student at Tech and received many awards for her outstanding service to both faculty and fellow students.  Gene is remembered as someone with great courage who was an inspiration to the many people whose lives she touched.  She is survived by her three children, Claire Steinke of Denver, CO, Brad Floyd of Brooklyn, NY, LuAnn Floyd of Nashville, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  Interment is in Nashville, TN. 

October 30, 2012:  JAMES ELMER DAVIS died on this day in Germantown, TN.  Jim proudly served his country for four years as sonar technician aboard the submarine USS Remora. For almost 40 years, he was employed as project engineer for Bell Telephone. While at Tech, he was a pitcher for the baseball team and enjoyed playing the game well into his forties.  An avid golfer, he learned to snow ski at the age of 60.  Jim was an active member of Germantown United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Rush Davis, his children, Kathy Davis McMahan, James William Davis, his step-daughters, Kelly Dooley and Mindy Jones and five grandchildren .

September 3. 2012:  The class of '50 lost a true friend and supporter when JERRY D. STEWART died today.  Jerry was always on top of everything that concerned his classmates, and he quickly passed along any important news to others. He was an active, long time member of Central Church, a Master Mason and member of Unity Lodge, Scottish Rite and Al Chymia Shrine Temple.  Jerry was wearing the uniform of the U.S. Navy 60 years ago when he married his devoted wife, Elaine (Tech '52).  Their union proved to be a "match made in heaven."  He held the rank of Executive Captain in Uniform Patrol at West Precinct when he retired 26 years later from the Memphis Police Department.  In addition to Elaine, he is survived by his daughter, Pam  Brant, a son, Don Stewart, 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.   Our condolencies are extended to all his family and his many, many friends. 

August 1, 2012:  Congratulations are in order for NANCY DONALDSON DILLS and RICHARDSON CALLICOTT (Tech '49)  who were married at St. Louis Catholic Church in Memphis, on November 26, 2011.  They recently moved into their new home on a golf course in Oakland, TN.

June 17, 2012:  HELEN DUNAVANT (SOUCY) peacefully passed away today at her home in Memphis surrounded by her loving family.  She was a former employee of the Shelby County Clerk's office.  Helen is survived by her daughter, Denise Amsden; 3 sons, Steve Baiel, Jean-Pierre and Yves Armond; 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren

March 10, 2012:  CHARLES LEWIS HALL, SR. died on this date in Webster, TX.  Charles retired from Baxter Healthcare International after 33 years.and after retiring, he was a realtor for many years in east Texas.  He is survived by his wife,. Joni Lee Hall of Galveston, TX, daughters, Amanda Hall of Galveston, Laura Hall of Atlanta and Carol Wilson of McKinney, son, Charles L. Hall, Jr. of Atlanta, 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

February 13, 2012:  HAROLD H. REED died on this date in Memphis.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 25 years of service.  Harold is survived by his sons, Phillip Reed of Katy, TX and Eddie Reed of Olive Branch, MS, daughter, Mary Beth Phillips of Collierville, TN,  brother Jim Reed of Ashland, AL and sister, Sheila Cooper of Michigan, 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren..  

October 26, 2011:   EARL EDWARD LUCIUS died October 26, 2011 in Olive Branch, MS.  Earl was a retired customer service agent at MLGW.  He is survived by his wife, Lurlene; 2 sons, Rich A. and Tedd E. Lucius; 2 stepsons, Richard M. and Randall C. Gandy; one  stepdaughter, Cindy D. Smith and a brother, Thomas O. Lucius.   Our condolences are extended  to all family members to his many friends.

June 5, 2011:   BARBARA JOY ANDERSON (CRAIG) died June 5, 2011 at Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital.  Our sympathies are sent to her husband of almost 60 years, Davis Craig; daughter Linda Cerrito; sons, David A. Craig and Brian L. Craig and 9 grandchildren.  While at Tech, Barbara was a member of the National Honor Society, Sponsors' Club, 50 Club, Young Life Club and many other activities.  Her philosophy was: "Give back to the world the best you have, and it will come back to you."    

April 23, 2011:   On this date, GERALD H. "JERRY" CARTER passed away at his home in Memphis.  He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth, his son, Robert B. Carter and four grandchildren.  Jerry was a member of the U.S. Air Force where he served with the 2nd Radio Squadron Mobile as a radio interceptor operator during the Korean conflict.  Upon discharge, he was employed with the Dept. of Defense, retiring in 1987.   Condolences are conveyed to his extended family and many friends.    

April 5, 2011:  MILDRED JANE FULTON (MILAM) died on this date in  Memphis.  At Tech, Mildred was inducted into The National Honor Society and she was an active member of The Commercial Club in '49 and '50.  Her ambition was: "To make someone else glad that I lived."   Our sympathies are sent to her son, Roy Milam and to her other family members and friends. 

December 31, 2010:   JAMES R. HOLMES passed away at his home in Olive Branch, MS on December 8, 2010.  James was a retired captain with the Memphis Police Department and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.  He is survived by his daughter, Wanda Hartsfield, and one granddaughter, Hope Holmes.  We convey our sympathies to all his friends and family.

December 1, 2010:  CORAL LYNN HENRY (PENNINGER) died peacefully in the home of her son in Germantown, TN on November 28, 2010.  She was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend.  Because of her love for the beach and the sea, it was her wish to be cremated and have a private memorial service in the Clearwater, St. Petersburg area.  Condolences are extended to her three sons, Henry Penninger, Teddy Penninger Russ Penninger and  their families. 

November 1, 2010:  WILLIAM T. COCHRAN passed away at his home in Memphis on October 12, 2010 after a long illness.  He leaves his wife of 58 years, Florine Jordan Cochran and 4 children: Vicky Roper of Southaven, MS, Rose McNiell of Olive Branch, MS, Tom Cochran, of Germantown, TN and Rusty Cochran of Collierville, TN.  While at Tech, Bill was a member of ROTC and the Non-Com Club.  He was a star in many sports in high school, including football, basketball, baseball and track.  In 2008, Bill was honored by being inducted into the Memphis Amateur Sports Hall of Fame in basketball.  A faithful member of the '50 Reunion Committee, he was active in many ways over the years.  Deep condolences are sent to his family and friends. 

October 31, 2010:   TROY W. BOWLING died August 22, 2010 in Marshall Town, IA.  While at Tech, he served 3 years in ROTC and was chosen to be a member of the Officers' Club, rifle team, color guard, burial squad and Saber Club.  Troy was  an outstanding athlete and is remembered by his classmates for his efforts in helping to win many baseball and bowling games.  Perhaps Troy is one of only a few classmates who could say that he had a perfect attendance all 3 years while in high school.   Our sympathies are extended to his wife, Donna and their sons, Terry Bowling of Branson, MO and Bruce Bowling, of Gainesville, FL.

We have been notified recently that CATHERINE SIMONS (SPECK) passed away December 16, 2009 in Winona, MS.  Catherine was active in Tech's Glee Club and she was very proud of winning first place in the Mid-South Fair for her delicious jelly recipe.  After retirement from MLGW, she moved to Winona.  Condolences are conveyed to her family and friends.   

July 8, 2010:  JEANETTE RUMLEY (BRADY) died July 6, 2010 in Middleton, TN following heart surgery on April 30.  She was the widow of Jack Brady, who was the love of her life.  Jeanette leaves 3 sons, Gary and Tom Brady of Middleton and Ken Brady of Bartlett.   Our sympathies are extended to her family and many friends.  

June 15, 2010:   RALPH K.. PHILLIPY, JR. died at home in Memphis on his birthday, June 13, 2010 after a long illness.  Ralph was a graduate of UT with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and he was a partner/owner of Systems Analysis  & Balancing, Inc. He was an active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral.  Over the years, Ralph remained a continuous supporter of UT in many capacities and he faithfully served on the Tech High 1950 Reunion Committee since its beginning.  He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carmen, his daughters, Terri Hale and Lou Ann Phillipy, his son, R. Kent Phillipy, Jr. and his brother, Edwin.   We convey our deep condolences to his family and many, many friends. 

June 11, 2010:  MARVIN D. WINSTON passed away in Memphis on June 9, 2010,  after  a courageous battle with an extended illness,  Marvin served in the U.S Marines during the Korean War.  He was a licensed attorney and a career employee with MLGW.  Marvin remained active after retirement and served on the board of retirees at MLGW and he also was on the board for the Salvation Army.  He taught evening classes in accounting at State Technical Institute for many years and was coach of the Germantown Track Club. We extend our deepest sympathies to Clynese, his wife of 55  years, his daughters, Sheila Patrick, Sandra Coleman, Sharon Woodman, and his brother, Charles.

April 15, 2010:   It has been reported to us that VIRGINIA SCHULTZ (HUMPHREYS) passed away on December 29, 2009.   Our sympathies are extended to her husband, Leonard and all her family.

March 31, 2010:  BOBBIE ANN SMITH (BULL) lost her long and courageous battle with cancer on March 27,  2010.  Our condolences are extended to her devoted husband of almost 60 years, Norman and their daughter, Laurie Ecklund of Cordova.   Bobbie was a life member of the American Contract Bridge League, winning many tournaments in the Mid-South area.   Her friendship and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all of us.

March 11,  2010:    Have you noticed the addition of our '50 Yearbook to this website?  We will enjoy the many happy remembrances it revives for each of us.   Thank you, Gene and Sue for all your hard work.     

February 8, 2010:   Our 60th REUNION is just around the corner --- APRIL 30 and MAY 1 ---  Information and reservation material will be mailed early next month.   We have guest rooms blocked at Fogelman Executive Conference Center at the agreed upon rate of $75 per night.  Reservations must be made by April 5.   Call the Hotel Reservation Department at 901-678-5410.   You must request the group rate for Tech High School 1950.  Jerry Stewart or Don Hild may be contacted if more info is needed at this time. 

January 9, 2010:    We have just learned of the sudden and unexpected death of BOBBY BEST at his home in Annandale, VA. on  January 4.  He is survived by his wife, Somsri, to whom we extend our deepest sympathies.  Bobby began his civil service career with the U.S. Army, and retired as Director of Human Resources with the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

December 1, 2009:    Note from Nancy:  After many weeks of recuperation from surgery, your so-called "webmaster" is finally back at her job!  Please contact me via email or call  with any information you would like to see included in this News section.    

We were very sorry to hear that BOBBY SORRELL died of cancer on August 26, 2009 in Vider, TX..  He is survived by his wife, Shelby.  Also, our dear friend, LORETTA HEALY (HIGGINBOTHAM) passed away suddenly on April 3, 2009 in Dallas, TX.  She is survived by her daughter, Linda and two grandchildren.  Our sincere sympathies are extended to both families.

June 15, 2009:   MARK YOUR CALENDARS!    April 30 and May 1, 2010 are the dates set for our 60th REUNION.   The new St. George's Episcopal Church on Germantown Rd. and The Fogelman Executive Conference Center on the U of M campus have been reserved for the barbeque on Friday night and the dinner on Saturday night.   Luncheons are also being planned for both the men and women on Friday, the 30th.   Detailed information will be mailed out later.

June 10, 2009:   BARBARA LEONARD (BERNARDINI) died on May 30, 2009 in Memphis after a long fight against cancer with its many complications.  For the last 30 years, Barbara was a devoted volunteer serving the residents at the Kings Daughters and Sons Home.  We send our deep condolences to her children, Pat Bernardini, Marie Peacock and Tony Bernardini.  

May 20, 2009:  DRUSILLA LOMAX (STRATTON)  and  JOHN ROBERT JONES  both died on April 23, 2009 in Memphis, TN.   Drusilla leaves her husband, Gerald and  three children, Rebecca and John Stratton and Jennifer Muhlbaur.   John is survived  by his  wife, Glenda and  three daughters Janell Grizzard, Jeannine Bargainer, and Johnette White.  We extend our sincere sympathies to both families. 

March 23, 2009:  OTIS LOTT, JR.  died on March 16, 2009 in Coldwater, MS.   Everyone enjoyed seeing and visiting with him at our last reunion.  Otis loved to hunt and he passed much of his time performing and listening to classical music.   He served in the Navy during the Korean War.   We extend our deepest sympathies to Ann, his wife of 58 years and his three daughters Katie Jones,  Kelly Gaines and Amy Crockett.

November 30, 2008:  The passing of FAYE MAC DONALD (CRAWFORD) on November 23, 2008 in Memphis, has left a giant hole in all our hearts.  To say she will be greatly missed is an understatement.  Faye's Christian faith and enthusiasm for life were contagious and she seemed to always bring out the best in each of us.  When plans for our 2010 reunion begin,  Faye's physical absence will be felt, but her generous spirit will be present.  The reunion committee could always depend on her to be among the first to volunteer for any task, no matter how difficult or challenging.   To her three daughters, Tassie McCollum, Leann Rollins, Kimberly Murphee and their families, we offer our heartfelt sympathies.

October 31, 2008:   JEAN KENDRICK (DERRYBERRY) died on October 5, 2008 in Oxford, MS.  Condolences are extended to her son, Jay Derryberry who lives in Potts Camp, MS.

July 29, 2008:  After a very long and confining illness, HENRIETTA "TWEEKEY" IRVIN (BICKHAM) passed away in Pocahontas, AR on July 18, 2008.  She will be dearly missed by her many friends and family members.  Our thoughts and prayers are especially with her son, Scott and her sisters, Mickey and Corkey.

June 1, 2008:  Our condolences are extended to the family of PATRICIA VANDERGRIFT (SMITH), who  died in Taft, California on March 22, 2008 of complications from pneumonia.         

December 2007:  DOROTHY GIARDINO (JUSTUS) passed away on September 20, 2007 in Byhalia, MS.  Our class also lost JAMES MCKEE, who died on May 7, 2007 in Las Vegas, NV.  They will be missed by their family and many friends.

August 6, 2007:  TOMMY (THOMAS G). CHILDRESS died July 30, 2007 in Punta Gorda, FL  from complications due to brain cancer.  Our condolences are extended to his wife of 53 years, Amy (Aeschliman) and his daughters, Terrie and Nancy.

June 13, 2007:  MARIANNE RABY (MOORE) died June 8, 2007 in Waycross, GA.  She was the wife of  Billy Wayne Moore (Tech '50),, who died in 1970.   Our condolences are extended to her brothers, Glynn Raby (Tech '42) and Richard Raby (Tech '44), and all her family members. 

June 3, 2007:   CAROLYN TUCKER (TOWNSEND) passed away this morning at her home in Memphis.  She had not been ill and her death was sudden and unexpected.   Our heartfelt sympathies are offered  to Walter, the children and their extended family.  

 May 1, 2007:  The reunion was a great success!   Good attendance:  Friday, 103 pp.; Saturday, 90 pp.  Everyone especially enjoyed being at the Fogelman Center.  The barbeque was delicious at St. George's, too.   Also, the girls had an enjoyable luncheon at Lulu's restaurant.  Be sure and look at all the pictures on this web site.    The committee is already discussing the next reunion in 2010 so watch for the plans.   And if any of you move, be SURE to notify Don Hild.

April 25, 2007:   ALLIE ROBARDS, who was a friend to everyone who knew him, lost his long and tough fight with lung cancer yesterday, April 24 at his home in Bartlett, TN.   Allie was a special friend to us and he was always available to help others in any way possible.  He was an active member of the reunion committee for many years.  Allie was looking forward to our reunion this weekend with great anticipation...we will miss him and a vacancy will be felt in our hearts as we gather together and reminisce at our 57th.   Joy, our sympathies are extended to you and all your family.

March  31, 2007:   WAYNE ROBBINS died after a long illness on March 28, 2007 in Linden, TN.  Many of us remember him and his great talent playing the guitar.  We understand he had a very successful career producing special guitars for many leading musicians in Nashville and around the country.  Our condolences are sent to his family. 

January 10, 2007:   ATTENTION TECH HIGH CLASS OF 1950:  Our 57th year reunion will be held on Friday, April 27, '07 at St. George's Episcopal Church and Saturday, April 28 at the Fogelman Executive Conference Center (on U of M campus).   A ladies luncheon is also planned for Friday, 11:30 a.m.  Information with ALL details, including hotel accommodations will be in the mail  soon.  Reservations with payment for Friday and Saturday must be received no later than April 1.   We are looking forward to seeing you.  There will be lots of fun and many surprises!!!   

January 8, 2007:  December '06 brought the deaths of two more friends:  YVONNE BURNS, on the 11th and PAUL LIMBAUGH, on the 19th.  Our sympathies are offered to their families. 

October 20, 2006:   We have been notified of JOHN GUINN's death on October 16, 2006 in Ravenden Springs, AR.  Everyone was so glad to see John at the last reunion and we will miss him.  Our condolences are extended to Sue and the Guinn family.

September 8, 2006:   Our classmate, ED YOUNG lost his long and courageous fight against diabetes last evening.  Ed was an active and faithful  member of the reunion committee and a hard worker for the 1950 class.  He will be greatly missed.   Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. today at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel with funeral services at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 10.  Our sympathies are extended to Pat and her family. 

August 7, 2006:   RE:  2007 REUNION ... The location for the Friday night (April 27) barbeque is still indefinite because the Pickering Center will not make these reservations for us until October.   However, the contract has been signed for the Saturday night (April 28) dinner.  It will be held at The Fogelman Center located on the Memphis State University campus. It is right across the street from the Holiday Inn on Central Ave. 

Arrangements for motel rooms can be made for The Fogelman Center at $75 plus tax per night.  Courtesy vans are available (without charge) for transportation to and from the airport.  (Holiday Inn manages The Fogelman Center.)  If  early reservations are made, be sure and inform them that you are attending the Tech Class of 1950 reunion in order to receive this special rate.  You will be receiving a mailing with all details in January.  If  anyone has any questions, please call Jerry Stewart or Don Hild. 

April 18, 2006:  We have just been notified that VIRGINIA DELORES ROACH  died in January, 1994.  With this information, we can officially report that ALL 1950 Tech High graduates have been located.  Congratulations, Don! 

April 17, 2006:  We have recently learned of the death of AL GENE PERRY DALTON on March 27 in Key Largo, FL.  A graveside service will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery on May 11 at 3:00 P.M. 

April 16, 2006:  Don Hild reports his success in finding 3 of the last 4 classmates we listed on April 3.  There is only ONE person left to located...VIRGINIA DELORES ROACH...Any ideas anyone???  PLEASE LET US KNOW!

April 3, 2006:  NEWS FLASH!!   With much hard work, shoe leather and CSI-worthy sleuthing, Don Hild has located 9 more of our "lost" classmates!   Please make his day by helping him find the FINAL FOUR: Estelle Elizabeth Combes,  Bettie Mae Lee, Virginia Marr Mitchell and Virginia Delores Roach.  So far, we carry the reputation of having found more of our graduates than any other Tech High class.  And we've been told we're beating Central High in their recovery efforts, too!   Go Yellowjackets!!!  

March 21, 2006:   Sadly, I must report to you the passing of another classmate.  Fred McClung died March 13, 2006 at his home in Bartlett. TN.  He leaves a daughter, 3 sons, and 6 grandchildren.

March 7, 2006:  The 1950 Reunion Committee met and made more decisions regarding our next reunion, which will take place on  April 27-28, 2007.  Watch for more details later. 

January 5, 2006:  Condolences are extended to Don Agnew upon the death of his wife, EVELYN GENTRY AGNEW, on December 24.

August 17, 2005:  With many thanks to Don Hild & Jerry Stewart, the Reunion Committee has completed their goal of seeing that all '50 graduates (except for the 14 who cannot be located) have received an updated copy of our directory.

July 23, 2005:  We are sorry to report that since our reunion, we have lost 2 of our classmates: Joann Taylor and Larry Christley.
